Ten major topics for 2019 related to consumer affairs

Every year, NCAC publishes "ten major topics related to consumer affairs" of the year chosen out of the cases that drew significant public attention and/or resulted in a large number of consumer inquiries.

The year of 2019 was marked by scams capitalizing on the change of era, problems related to money making offers (e.g. binary options) from unregistered companies mainly experienced by young people, and inquiries related to SNS.

Ten major topics for 2019 related to consumer affairs

  • Problems related to money making offers encountered by an increasing number of young people.
  • Internet-related inquiries from all the age groups. Trouble was sometimes triggered by SNS.
  • Ongoing inquiries related to billing fraud. New tricks appeared.
  • Still many inquiries from elderly people.
  • No end of child injuries, including fatal accidents.
  • Enforcement of the Act on Ensuring the Proper Distribution of Show and Event Tickets by Prohibiting the Unauthorized Resale of Specified Show and Event Tickets in June. Inquiries about ticket resale increased by five times.
  • Suspicious phone calls one after another, probably from criminals trying to get personal information and whereabouts.
  • Consumers suffered from scams capitalizing on the change of era.
  • With the advancement of cashless payment, associated problems increased.
  • Natural disasters here and there. NCAC offered telephone consultation services for residents in devastated areas.
